The Moreland Muster, Volume VI, Issue 4 Fall 1993

MORELAND LETTERS

Dear Nona,
The... [following] are soundex, not census, [so] I didn’t send to Eldon... The ones with [asterisks] are sons of Lawson MORELAND, my great-grandfather. They are Alfred, George, James, John T., and my grandfather, Robert. Shown living with Robert’s family is Lawson’s widow, my great-grandmother, Margaret (BILLINGS).

I am fairly sure that all of the MORELANDs shown in Vigo County are descendants of William MORELAND of Estill Co., Kentucky. You remember Shirley Spetman’s ancestors? She thought he might be a son of Thomas, one of the four brothers [from Goochland Co., Virginia]. Never confirmed. The tip-off here are the names Elijah, Catherine WILLOUGHBY, William, all born in Kentucky. And Shirley did mention that some of this family did go to Vigo Co., Indiana.

Charles Moreland, 15508 Saranac Dr., Whittier, CA 90604.

Note from Nona: Thanks, Charles. It’s interesting that you may have located some more descendants of Thomas MORELAND. I checked my files and found the following information about the family of Elijah MORELAND and wife Sarah Ann ROBERTSON. Elijah was the son of William MORELAND and Rhoda WILLOUGHBY and William might have been Dudley’s son. Also see the item below from Ramona Armstrong Duff.

The children of Elijah and Sarah were:

1. George MORELAND

2. William Gideon MORELAND b. 18 Mar. 1837, Estill Co., KY; d. 11 Sept. 1895; md. 6 Sept. 1866 to Ellen WILLOUGHBY

3. James M. Thomas MORELAND b. 4 Nov. 1841; d. 27 Oct. 1921; md. Sarah J. WILLOUGHBY, widow of Nelson BROWN of Vigo Co., Indiana

4. Alexander Campbell MORELAND married first to Ellen KING and second to Miss CHRISTOPHER.

5. Susan MORELAND

6. Herman Daniel MORELAND

7. Nancy MORELAND married Samuel MORELAND

8. John MORELAND

9. Girl

Also in my files is Chesley MORELAND born 1808 in Estill Co., Kentucky. He married in Clay Co., Missouri and died in Platte Co., Missouri.

James F. MORELAND married 11 July 1867 Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana to Rhoda Jane PARKER born 1842 Vigo Co., Indiana, daughter of Greenberry PARKER and Elizabeth WILLOUGHBY.

Margaret MORELAND married 29 Apr. 1875 Missouri to Edgar P. ARNOLD born 1847 Macomb Co., Michigan.

MORE MORELAND NEWS

Nona,
Muster Vol. II, #4 indicates that Dudley’s [Revolutionary War] Pension Record is #7360. This should be #7368. I was able to obtain his complete Pension Record File from the National Archives. A most interesting file of papers which I have now used to establish my version of his family group record (FGR). I would indeed welcome any comments, suggestions, corrections, additions, etc.

As near as I can determine from previous correspondence, and my own research, current knowledge of this family is based solely on this Pension record; known marriage records, and the Goochland Co., Virginia Tax Lists. If any of you have knowledge of any others please let me know.

This FGR Dudley differs from some of the previously exchanged ones in the following respects:

John MORELAND in his Declaration of 25 May 1846 (Clinton Co., Kentucky County Court, September Term 1846) states “according to the best information he has of his age he is now fifty six years old the 11th day of June next.” This establishes a birth date of 11 June 1791 for him in lieu of the 11 June 1795 date reflected on previous FGRs.

John’s 1846 Declaration provides the only source for the names of Dudley’s children, surviving and dead, at least as far as I can determine. These are: surviving - Mary WHALEY, Anne BRUMMIT (BRUMMUT?), Winny (Minny?) HOLLEY, and Elizabeth who I read as WOODBY in lieu of the previous MOODY. The deceased is given as: William. I note that Melba lists a Jacob (16) and Jesse? (17) as children of Dudley in Vol. V, #4, p. 4 of the Muster. I have not picked them up as I am not yet aware of the documented source for their inclusion. I would welcome details on this.

[Note from Nona: The addition of Jacob and Jesse to the family of Dudley was a theory of Melba’s based on the 1830 census record of Wayne Co., Kentucky. There is no documentation that I’m aware of that would place those two as sons of Dudley and we haven’t identified the family group to which they belong.]

Previous FGRs have positioned William as Dudley’s third child. In this Declaration, John states that there are two surviving children older than himself, Mary WHALEY and Anne BRUMIT. I do not read this to necessarily infer that William was likewise older than John, and have now placed him as the fourth child, which seems to provide of a more logical sequence.

Joseph L. Brumit, 12947 Blue Bonnet Dr., Sun City West, AZ 85375-2517.

MORELAND LINES

Jonah MORLAN/MORELAND married Feb. 1804, Bedford Co., Virginia to Mary WRIGHT b. 6 Oct. 1784 Bedford Co., VA, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth WRIGHT.

Isaac MORELAND married 19 Jan. 1814, Columbiana Co., Ohio to Martha WRIGHT b. 26 Oct. 1793 Bedford Co., Virginia, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth WRIGHT.

Children:

1. Albert MORLAN b. 23 Oct. 1818 Columbiana Co., Ohio.

2. Charity MORLAN b. 12 Sept. 1816, Columbiana Co., Ohio.

3. Joel MORLAN b. 7 July 1819, Columbiana Co., Ohio

4. Joseph MORLAN b. 14 July 1822, Columbiana Co., Ohio.

5. Harriet MORLAN b. 11 Apr. 1824 Columbiana Co., Ohio

6. Isaac MORLAN b. 28 Sept. 1826, Columbiana Co., Ohio

7. Mary MORLAN b. 14 Sep. 1829 Columbiana Co., Ohio

8. Martha MORLAN b. 26 Feb. 1831 Columbiana Co., Ohio

I have a John WRIGHT who married Mary PACE in Goochland Co., Virginia in 1756. I don’t know if they were related to the WRIGHTs of York Co., Virginia. You explained that Ann WRIGHT, daughter of John J. WRIGHT, married Matthew MORELAND and had a son named Wright MORELAND who moved to Goochland Co., Virginia in 1761.

My WRIGHTs in Goochland appear to have been there in the first half of the 1700s, when your WRIGHTs were in York Co., Virginia. Whether there was any connection earlier than that, I can’t say.

Also I can’t say whether it is mere coincidence that there were later WRIGHT-MORELAND marriages in my line. Both Mary and Martha WRIGHT were daughters of Joseph WRIGHT, Quaker; he was a son of the John WRIGHT who married Mary PACE in Goochland Co., Virginia in 1756.

Jay B. Wright, 416 Brooklea Dr., Fayetteville, NY 13066-1404.

QUERIES

Are any of the Maries Co., Missouri Indian?

Respond to Betty Ann Boyd, 5802 Bell Park, Amarillo, TX 79109.

· · · · ·

The following two queries are completely unrelated. One is on my father’s side of the family and the other is my husband’s.

Query #1
I would like to find more information on James F. MORELAND who married Rhoda Jane PARKER in Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana on 11 July 1867. Who were his parents and siblings? Where did he come from before moving to Indiana? Any information at all on this would be greatly appreciated.

Query #2
I am looking for more information on Margaret MORELAND who was living with her husband, Edgar P. ARNOLD, in the 1880 census in Henry Co., Missouri. I could not find this family after 1880. What became of them? Who were her parents? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Respond to Ramona Armstrong Duff, PO Box 95, Hydro, OK 73048-0095.

· · · · ·

I would like information about the Thomas JOHNSTON on page 13 of the last Moreland Muster [mentioned as a neighbor of Wright MORELAND in a deed]. I have wondered for a long time if he may be the one who was in Bedford Co., Tennessee in 1820, as a widower with a small son. Thomas is in Coffee Co., Tennessee in 1850, age 70, with wife, Mary, age 40. There are 10 Thomas JOHNSTONs in Tennessee in the 1820 census and 20 in the 1830 census. My Thomas had 3 children: William of Marble Hill, Missouri; Jane JOHNSTON ALLEN of Commerce, Texas and Calvin whose son, Louis, married Joan SIMPSON in Oregon Co., Missouri. The above Calvin was a great friend of Thomas Carey SIMPSON, Primitive Baptist preacher who married Mary Jane WHITTEN and came to Arkansas from Oregon Co., Missouri. I have letters from both men.

Looking for where Thomas McQuitz Moreland is buried. He was born in Ohio abt 1848 and married to Cordelia L DAVIS until late 1800's, and they divorced. He isn't to be found in the 1900 census, but he shows up in Stanislaus county, CA 1910 and he is listed in the directory of Stanislaus (Turlock and Modesto) 1912, 1914 and 1916. After that, he can't be found. reneef1964@yahoo.com. Thank you, Christine
