MORELAND
RESEARCH
from C.E. Moreland
15508 Saranac Dr.
Whittier, CA 90604
I recently bought a book called Colonial Records of Virginia.
This info was originally published in 1874 and reprinted several times - the
last by Clearfield.
I was always curious as to what happened to Thomas MORELAND - the one who sailed from England for Virginia in 1621 on the “Abigail” with Ralph HOODE,
both being servants of Robert THESHER.
This is the same Thomas who was the
subject of several letters from Muster
subscribers. Irene Carl said he was killed in the great massacre of 1622 - and
that another Thomas MORELAND
appeared in Virginia in 1624. Another said he married Elizabeth BAYLEY - this is one I have strong doubts about. Mr.
Knight from Georgia said he was born on the Isle of Wight, England and died in the Grafton District of York Co.,
Virginia at the age of 61. We know there is a record of
Thomas MORELAND buying land that once belonged to Elizabeth BAYLEY and her husband in
Chiskiacke, Charles River (York) County, Virginia.
The record dated 5 March 1648.
The book mentioned above contains three lists of Virginia
colonists:
1. A list of names of those massacred on March 22, 1622 - 347
victims.
2. A list of those who died since April of 1622 or AFTER THE
MASSACRE - 371 names.
3. A list of those living on Feb. 16th, 1623 (after the
massacre) - 1277 names.
The following contains only names similar to MORELAND or names on some families that
I have done research on in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. All names are shown in the
book, but I only list the few mentioned above. Note that Thomas MORELAND’s name does not appear anywhere. He may be on later
lists that I am looking for. These lists came from the first volume of the
McDonald papers as copied from the Public Record of Great Britain.
Note that although Robert
THESHER (THRESHER?)
is shown in the list of living at Elizabeth Cittie, his two
servants who sailed with him on the “Abigail” are nowhere to be found. I assume
they arrived before the massacre, so I suppose they could have perished before
these lists were made, but I doubt it.
“Here following is
fet downe a true lift of the names of all thofe that were maffacred by the
treachery of the Sauages in Virginia, the 22nd of March laft.”

WASHINGTON
COUNTY, TENNESSEE
Death Record
Abstracts
1908-1916
by Eddie M. Nikazy
This
informative volume contains abstracts of death records for Washington County,
Tennessee, for the years 1908-1916.
Washington County was established in 1777 as a part of the territory south of
the Ohio River, and is “one of the most important early East Tennessee
counties.” The original county comprised almost the entire eastern half of the
current state of Tennessee.
Many
entries are for descendants of the original pioneer families who settled
Washington County. Names are listed according to the death record number (which
correspond to the official death record number on file at the Tennessee State
Archives). In addition to the deceased’s name and date of death, the records
contain the following information: “Where the reported place of birth is
different from the local county, the place of birth is stated. Name spelling
variation have been preserved. Where possible, the cause of death is quoted as
it appears in the record. Parenthetical entries following parents’ names
indicate the reported place of the parents’ birth. Parenthetical entries
following the informant’s name indicate place of residence.” 1994, 316 pp.,
