The Moreland Family
Bible with Grimsley Records
by Robert E.
Parkin
Robert E. Parkin is president of the St. Louis
Genealogical Society. He is a news writer for KSD-KSD TV, a community newspaper
editor, historian and editor. He has a vast index of early St. Louis French and
eastern Missouri pioneer genealogy.
The Moreland Family Bible is a King James version,
printed in 1813 by M. Carey, No. 121 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia.
The Bible apparently was acquired when new by Samuel MORELAND who inserted the dates of his two marriages
and birth dates of his children, all but two born before the volume was
published. There are indications the book passed into the hands of his son, James L. MORELAND,
and, thence, to James’s half-sister,
Frances MORELAND,
and, thus, into the GRIMSLEY family in August, 1836, when she was married
to Nimrod GRIMSLEY. Two two-sided
(4) pages of GRIMSLEY family records
are inserted among the MORELAND
family records, which are part of the Bible. Nimrod GRIMSLEY’s family emigrated in 1865 from Bath Co., Kentucky, to
Menard Co., Illinois, and
settled near Sweetwater.
The Bible now is in the hands of Mr and Mrs. Donald
Riley, Greenview, Illinois.
The Moreland Family Bible

containing the name George W. T.

Dear
Mrs. Walker:
I note in the Kentucky Bible Records, Vol. #1, that Mrs. Kate
Bridges Dickey is the owner of a Moreland Bible. I too, am the owner of a Moreland family Bible
which was published in 1832 and purchased by James L. Moreland in 1832.
I came into possession of this Bible upon the death of my Uncle John Alsop of Georgetown
last February. John Alsop's mother was Sarah
Ellen Jones Alsop. Her mother was Melissa Frances Moreland Jones, who was born in 1837, the
daughter of James L. Moreland,
born 1798. His father was Samuel Moreland,
born 1769 or 70, died 1848. Here an
impasse develops. My searchings have
failed to uncover anything else on Samuel
Moreland
-- where he lived or who his wife was.
Do you think that Mrs. Dickey would be interested in
sharing and trading any information that she might have?
If either of you are interested, I would appreciate
hearing from you. My wife and I hope to
be in Lexington in October. I could
bring along this Bible, which is in rather poor condition, for verification.
Sincerely,
W.
Frank Isaacs
Thanks to Mrs. Gordon R.
Moreland, 3050 Old Washington Rd., Waldorf, MD 20601-3121 for the records
printed above. At this point she has not been able to find a connection to her
husband’s line with any of these people. Apparently his Morelands remained in
Maryland.
QUERIES
I still have not been able to establish the
connection between Benjamin MORELAND and Evan
MORELAND,
my great-grandfather, although both witnessed a will in Hawkins Co., Tennessee, and
were associated in a church in Parke Co., Indiana,
during the 1830-1850 time period. Evan’s
daughter was named for Benjamin’s
wife. I have been unable to find a record of Evan’s birth on March 4, 1804, or his wedding to Dorothy (Dolly) MORRISON,
or of the birth of my grandfather, John,
on May 3, 1826.
Efforts to find Sheileigh
MORELAND,
also descended from Evan, have been
fruitless. She identified Benjamin
as Evan’s father, but no proof was
given. At the she wrote another Moreland living in Oklahoma, she was living in
Seattle.

I am particularly interested in a woman named Rhoda BUCK.
She was the daughter of Jonathan and
Susie BUCK. My father and his nieces
and nephews remember “Aunt Rody” as an old woman who had “wonderful” stories
about her life of sin. She told them about her first husband Bob CAROL / CARROLL,
who rode with Jesse JAMES.
We always thought the stories were just her own imagination but now I have
found some proof that she may have been telling at least part truth. Rhoda later married Isaac WHISENHUNT,
a man much older than she was.

Note from Nona: Information
suggests that Jesse James’ ancestors were in Goochland Co., Virginia at the
same time that the Morelands were there.
