Obituary of William Obe MORELAND (Charles’s grandfather who was born in 1881.)

The Rev. Obe MORELAND, 55 years of age, a Baptist minister, died Friday at Arjay. Rev. MORELAND had been in ill health for several months. He is survived by his wife and several children. The funeral was held Saturday in the Arjay Baptist Church with the Rev. William GARLAND conducting the services. Internment followed in the Wallsend cemetery under direction of N. T. ARNETT & Son.

State of Kentucky, County of Bell, as: On this 22nd day of Mary, 1924, personally appeared before me a Notary Public, within and for the county and state aforesaid, John C. MORELAND who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 84 years of age, and a resident of Pineville, county of Bell, State of Kentucky; and that he is the identical person who was enrolled at Barboursville, Kentucky, under the name of John C. MORELAND, on the 17th day of June 1863 as a Private in 2nd Lieut. Co. “H” 8th Tenn. Vol. Cav in the service of the United States in the Civil War and was Honorably Discharged at Knoxville, Tenn on the 15th day of Feb. 1865.

That his personal description at enlistment was as follows: Height 5 feet 6 inches; complexion fair, color of eyes hazel; color of hair dark; that his occupation was farmer; that he was born 3rd March 1840 at Johnson Co., Tennessee.

That he requires the regular personal aid and attendance of another person on account of the following disabilities: Stomache (sic) trouble, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, weak mind, cannot help himself. Hearing bad. Bad eyesight.

That since leaving the service he has resided at Bell Co., Kentucky and his occupation has been Miner, for 15 years not able to do anything at present.

            The affiant John C. MORELAND, after first being duly sworn States on oath that he is a Citizen and resident of Pineville, Bell Co., Kentucky, and that he is 84 years of age. He further states that his Physical condition is very bad at this time and has been bad since March the 1rst 1923, he States that he has been under the attendance of his son, Ed MORELAND, and his wife, Lizzie MORELAND, Continually since March the 1rst 1923, and before that time since January 1921, at intervals, He States that his son, Ed MORELAND, or his wife Lizzie MORELAND, is in constant attendance over him, since the first of March 1923. He also States that he cannot controll his Bowels, and that he cannot controll his Kidneys, and is very Feeble, not able to go anywhere except that he is under the care of one of the above named attendants, and that he has been Very burdensome to his son and DaughterinLaw for the past three Years. He further States that he is not confined to his bed at all times but if he did not have some one to look after him it would not be safe for him to leave his bed.

            And further deponent says not.

C. MORELAND, Co. “H”, Eighth Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry, 2nd district who died at Pineville, Kentucky on the 30th day of November 1925.

Declaration for Original Invalid Pension

            On this 15th day of December 1879 personally appeared before me C. W. JONES Clerk of the Laurel County Court a court of record within and for the county and state aforesaid John C. MORELAND, aged 39 years, a resident of Laurel Co., Kentucky, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that be is the identical John C. MORELAND who enlisted under the name of John C. MORELAND on the 19 day of June 1863 as a private in company H of the 8th regiment of Tenn. Cav. Commanded by Lt. Col. Thos. J. CAPPS and was honorably discharged at Knoxville, Tennessee on the 5 day of December 1864, that his personal description is as follows: Age 39 years; height 5 feet 8 inches; complexion fair; hair dark; eyes dark. That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of duty at Gallatin in the State of Tennessee on or about the 25 day of June 1864 he contacted acute rheumatickes and pneumonia fever by which diseases his heart, liver, and digestive organs were impaired and he has been suffering almost continually since then on account of said disability which was caused by exposure while in the line of duty.

That he was treated in hospitals as follows: In ___ and at private house in Gallatin, Tennessee by Dr. C. WHIELEN Asst. Regt’l Surgeon at Columbia, Tennessee in ___ by Dr. J. A. BRADY Regt’l Surgeon

That since the 5 day of December 1864 he has not been employed in the military or naval service of the United States. That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the State of Tennessee to 1870 and in Kentucky since and his occupation has been that of a farmer. That prior to his entry into the service named he was a man of good, sound, physical health, being when enrolled a farmer. That he is now partially disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reasons of his injuries, above described, received in the service of the United States; and he therefore makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid pension roll of the United States. He hereby appoints with full power of substitution and revocation Gilmore & Co. Of Washington, D.C. His true and lawful Attorneys to prosecute his claim. That he has not received nor applied for a pension. That his Post Office address is: Mershans(?) county of ____? State of Kentucky.
