Early Morelands of Hardy Co., West Virginia
by Ernest L. Moreland
3660 Simmons Church Road
Centerburg, OH 43011-9450

Walter MORELAND was born 1796/7 and died ____. He married Susanna HARRIS on 10 Dec. 1817 in Hardy Co., Virginia. They had 11 children:  William, Susanna, John, Polly, Henry, Thomas, George, Wilson A., Thornton Sanford, Thompson, and Daniel Samuel MORELAND. The last child, Daniel S. was born by Walter’s second wife, Lucretia SCHELL, whom he married 10 Jan. 1836 in Hardy Co., Virginia. This family was in the 1820 and 1830 census in Hardy County but by 1840 had moved to Brown Co., Ohio. They were there also in 1850 & 1860 census. By the 1880 census, Lucretia had moved with her son’s (Daniel) family to Livingston Co., Missouri. From legal documents Walter bought 72 acres in Hardy County in 1829 and sold it in 1837 (Hardy Co., Virginia deed records 11-106 and 14-321). History of Grant and Hardy Counties by E.L. Judy gave his marriage dates. In 1821 Walter bought 13 items at William MORELAND’s estate sale (Hardy County Will Book 3 page 122-123). Most of the research on this family comes from a descendant, Nellie Spencer, PO Box 57, Commerce City, CO 80037.

Pamelia MORELAND was married to George SHROUT 12 June 1818 in Hardy Co., Virginia. They had 12 children: Beckwith B., Ann Amelia, Margery, Hampton, Elkanah T., Rachel, Lethe Jane, Osceola, George, Sarah, Hider, and Mary SHROUT. From legal documents, they are in the 1850 Hardy County census, George SHROUT left a will on 11 June 1866, Hardy County Will Book 1, pg. 3. Their marriage is from History of Grant and Hardy Counties, Virginia by E.L. Judy. Much of this information has come from a descendant, Virginia Miller, 101 Inwood Road, W. Jefferson, OH 43162.

Henry MORELAND was born 1790-1800 and died 1842 in Hardy Co., Virginia. He married Mary SMITH 14 Nov. 1819 in Hardy Co., Virginia, who was born 1801 and died ____. They had 12 children: John, dau. ?, William, Henry Hanson, dau. ?, dau. ?, dau. ?, Susan, Mary, Harriet, Elizabeth and Margaret MORELAND. From legal documents, this family is in the 1830-1850 census in Hardy Co., Virginia. Henry’s estate is recorded in West Virginia Estate Settlements by Ross B. Johnston, page 139. Their marriage record is in History of Grant and Hardy Counties, Virginia by E.L. Judy. Henry bought three items at William MORELAND’s estate sale in 1821 (Will Book 3-122-3).

William MORELAND was born ___ and died 1817 in Hardy Co., Virginia. A William MORELAND married Sarah COSNER jan. 28, 1815 according to History of Grant and Hardy Counties, Virginia by E.L. Judy. A Sarah bought two items at William MORELAND’s estate sale in 1821 (Will Book 3 page 122-123). William’s appraisal and inventory are recorded in Will Book 2, pgs. 290-291 in Hardy Co., Virginia. If this William who died in 1817 is the same William who married Sarah COSNER (who was born 1892), then he is probably of the same generation as Henry, Pamelia and Walter mentioned above.

Walter and Susanna; Pamelia and George; Henry and Mary; and William and Sarah were all married by the same J. JOHNSON, which to me shows strong hints that they may be of the same family.

John MORELAND is listed in the Sims Index to Land Grants in West Virginia as having entered 155 acres on Simpson’s Creek in 1798 (Bk 4, pg. 447). (Perhaps this John is the father of the above four mentioned.)

Samuel MORELAND was born 1809 and died ___. He married Elizabeth SMITH on 20 Jan. 1831 in Hardy Co., Virginia, who was born 1814 and died ____. They had at least seven children: John W., Charles H., George S., Joseph, Sarah E., Daniel, and Adam MORELAND. Their marriage is recorded in William Welch Marriages (1816-1867) by Margaret D. Cupler. This family appears in the 1840 and 1850 Hardy Co., Virginia census. The 1850 census also has a Christina MORELAND (b. 1787) living with them, perhaps Samuel’s mother).

Milly A. MORELAND was born 1818 and died ___. She and her three children: Ann R.C., Richard W.S., and Mary J.V. MORELAND are living with William W. MULLIN in the 1850 census and under remarks is the word “mulatto”.

Eliza MORELAND married Sam PONIFIRT 23 June 1840.

S. MORELAND married Abram KEYSER 19 October 1845 (source: William Welch Marriages 1816-1867 by Margaret D. Cupler.

Early Morelands of Hampshire Co., West Virginia
by Ernest L. Moreland, 3660 Simmons Church Road, Centerburg, OH 43011-9450

It is my aim to put together the first four generations of Morelands as they appear in documents and various records available. There are, of course, some missing pieces to the puzzle, as well as a few left overs that don’t seem to fit. I know there is more research to be done, but if I share what I have found so far, perhaps others will be able to add to this work.

William MORELAND is the first and eldest MORELAND that appears in Hampshire Co., West Virginia. He appears in the 1801-1814 personal property tax lists of Hampshire County (according to Vicki Horton’s copy of the record books). William bought 379 acres of land on North River on 14 Oct. 1802, deed book 13 page 137. He appears in the 1810 census as over 45 and with one son at home age 16-26. He appears in the 1820 census as alone and over 45. In the Hampshire County Common Law Order book #2, page 308, the May 21, 1821 session ordered David CARMICHAEL, John CAUDY, Jonathon HIETT, and George DEEVER to appraise the personal estate of William MORELAND, deceased. He left a will which was recorded in Will Book 6, however, this is one of the many books missing since the Civil War. His appraisal record, and inventory are recorded in Book 7 pages 20 and 354. As we develop the proof of his sons, it is safe to assume William MORELAND was born around 1750 period and we know he died before 21 May 1821.

It is my strong belief that Mary HAYES was the wife of William MORELAND. I can not yet prove this, but there is plenty of supporting evidence. A William HAYES of Charles Co., Maryland sold land to his daughter, Mary MORELAND, (w/o William MORELAND) in 1773. (Charles Co., Maryland deed Lbr. S Bk. 3, pg. 480-482). Then in 1801 William and Mary (HAYES) MORELAND sold her share of land from her father’s estate (Charles Co., Maryland deed Lbr. JB Bk. 3, pg. 432). This is the same year William MORELAND appears in Hampshire Co., Virginia. It is proven fact that William HAYES’ daughter, Eleanor KIDWELL moved to Hampshire Co., Virginia and that his son, Electious HAYES moved to Hardy Co., Virginia. William MORELAND’s son, Elisha, moved to Hardy Co., Virginia and bought land from Electious HAYES in 1802. Five out of six of the sons of William MORELAND named one of their daughters, Mary. One of William’s sons was named William H. MORELAND and he carried the H. (middle initial) in 95% of all documents. I feel that H. could stand for HAYES, being named after his grandfather, William HAYES. I realize all ofd this is circumstantial evidence and not proof, but sometimes that is the only hunch we have to go on.

Now for the sons of William MORELAND. Since the will of William MORELAND is lost, the next best source is deed records. It is clear proof in Hampshire Co., Virginia Deed Book 23, page 185 that Elisha MORELAND of Hardy Co., Virginia is a son of William, and also clear in Deed Book 27 page 429 that George W. MORELAND is a son of William.. Four other MORELANDs in the same generations as Elisha and George W. appear in the early Hampshire County records, William H. MORELAND, Richard MORELAND, Basil (Bezaleel) MORELAND, and David MORELAND. I believe these are also sons of William MORELAND and will develop a page on each son with the proofs and information discovered on him and his family.

Elisha Moreland

Elisha MORELAND was born ca. 1775 and died early in 1824 in Hardy Co., Virginia. He was married to Hanna ___, who was born 1787 and died after 1860.

Elisha first appears in the 1802-1804 Hampshire Co., Virginia personal property tax lists, but is gone by 1805. In 1802 he bought 100 acress in the Allegheny Mountains from Electus and Kezia HAYS of Hardy County. Elisha is referred to as “of Hampshire Co., Virginia” in the deed. He appears in the Hardy County 1820 census as Elisha MOLDEN, however the other known MORELANDs of Hardy County at that time are also listed as “MOLDEN” in the 1820 census. Hanna MORELAND and family appear in the 1830-1860 census. Elisha bought 200 additional acres in 1818 on the north forks of Patterson Creek from James and Rebecca MARGUES. Elisha’s estate records appear in Hardy County Will Book 4, inventory record appears June 24, 1824 on pp. 48-52 and the settlement on pg. 151 and 152. There was no will to name his children, but his land was divided up between six presumable heirs. I would assume these are his children. Much more is to be learned about Elisha and his family. He is named as son of William MORELAND in Hampshire Co., Virginia deed record 23 pg. 185.

Children
1.      Isaac MORELAND was born 1809 and died ____. He married Mary ___ before 1840. They had at least eight children: Rebecca C., Orpha, Thomas J., William S, Isaac, Mary L., Elizabeth J.V., and Keziah F. MORELAND (souces: 1840 and 1850 census records, Hardy Co., Virginia Deed Records 21-11, 21-13, 21-317, 24-174, 26-189, 21-12, 24-400.)
2.      William MORELAND was born 1811 and died ____. He married Susannah _____ beofre 1840, who was born 1813 and died after 1870. They had at least seven children: Mary E., Isaac J., Eliza E., Isalinda, Elisha M., Basil N.A., and Frederick S. MORELAND. (Sources: 1840-1870 census records, Hardy Co., Virginia Deed Record Book 21, pg. 317.)
3.      Basil MORELAND was born 1816 and died ____. He married Nancy _____ about 1855, who was born 1826 and died ____. They had four children: Sarah A., Amanda C., Hanna E. and Ada S. MORELAND. (Sources: Census records 1850-1870, Hardy Co., Virginia Deed Reocrds 23-324, 325; 21-9, 11, 13, 15, 317; 24-174, 400; 26-67, 189; 21-12.
4.      Mary MORELAND was born 1818 and died _____. She married Jacob FORSYTHE on 7 June 1842. To our knowledge they had no children and Jacob either died or left Mary by 1850, because she is back living with her mother in the 1850 and 1860 census. In the census she’s listed as Mary (Polly) MORELAND, but in the deeds she is listed as Mary (Polly) FORSYTHE. It was common to always list the husbands in deed records, but out of seven deeds she is listed only once as “wife of Jacob FORSYTHE”. (Sources: census records 1850 and 1860, Hardy Co., Virginia, Deed Records 21-9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 37; 26-189).
5.      Elisha MORELAND was born probably 1820-22 and died 1848/9. The only record we have on Elisha Jr. are the deed records recorded in 1848. He does no appear in the 1850 or 1860 census, nor in any of the deeds recorded after 1848. He is always listed “single” in the deeds. (Sources: Hardy Co., Virginia deed records 21-9, 11, 12, 13, 15).
6.      John MORELAND was born 1824 and died _____. He married Elizabeth HANLIN in 1851. They had two sons: David W. and James W. MORELAND. (Sources: 1850-1880 census records, Hardy Co., Virginia deed records 21-9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 317; 23-22, 325; 24-174; 26-189).

It needs to be noted that Solomon and Elizabeth MICHAEL are mentioned in eight of the deed records as though Elizabeth is an heir. However, according to the 1820-1840 census it fits that Mary was their only daughter. In the 1850 census there are two single Elizabeth MICHAELs that would fit age wise, the Elizabeth w/o Solomon is 57 (too old), plus she was a STINGLY according to one of the histories. Solomon Jr.’s wife was Emrella. More research needs to be done to figure out this piece of the puzzle. (Sources: Hardy Co., Virginia deed records 21-9, 11, 12, 13, 15; 23-22, 324; 26-189).

William H. MORELAND was born 11 May 1777 and died 30 Dec. 1863. He is buried at Capon Chapel Cemetery at Capon Bridge, West Virginia. He was married to Eleanor ____, who was born 17 June 1786 and died 10 March 1862. She is also buried at Capon Chapel.

William H. appears first in the Hampshire County personal property tax lists from 1801-1814. He also appears in the 1810-1860 census of Hampshire County. According to Hampshire County deed records he owned over 3500 acres of land in various parcels, which he bought and sold frequently. On 16 Dec. 1826 William H. bought 162 acres from George W. MORELAND in Licking Co., Ohio which he sold 28 March 1849. The deed states that William H. and George W. were both “of Hampshire Co., Virginia.” Martha (MORELAND) ANDERSON, a granddaughter of David MORELAND (of Licking Co., Ohio) wrote that she knew her grandfather had at least two brothers, Basil, who came to Ohio about the same time as her grandfather, and William, who was still living back in Virginia near his people. Martha personally knew her grandfather, since she was 14 when he died.

Children
1.     Mary MORELAND was born 10 Nov. 1806 and died 17 Jan. 1895. She married Robert M. POWELL, who was born 1800 and died _____. They had 12 children: Mary Ellen, Margaret Anmn, John W., Elisha J., William H., Robert D., David S., Sarah Elizabeth, George W., Rebecca Frances, Martha Cordelia, and Amanda C.V. POWELL. (Sources: Capon Valley by Maud Pugh, Historical Records of old Frederick and Hampshire Counties, Virginia by Wilmer Kerns, Early Records of Hampshire Co., Virginia by C. Sage and L. Jones, Hampshire Co., Virginia deed records 47-374, 48-259.)
2.     William MORELAND was born 11 May 1808 and died 11 May 1893. He is buried at Capon Chapel near his parents. This family moved to Brown Co., Ohio in 1828 and Margaret died there. They had eight children: William J., David M., Elizabeth, Rebecca J., Mary M., John W., Benjamin J., and Martha C. STUMP. (John B. STUMP died 28 Sept. 1876) (Sources: Stump Family by Wilmer Kerns, 1850 Brown Co., Ohio census record, Brown’s Chapel Cemetery, Brown County, Ohio History 1883, page 5559.)
4.     Rebecca MORELAND was born 6 Aug. 1812 and died 13 Aug. 1878. She married George SPAID on 25 Aug. 1836, who was born 12 Feb. 1812 and died 13 Mar. 1879. They had six children: Margaret, Mary, Rebecca, Lemuel, Fannie and Elisa SPAID. (Sources: History of Hampshire County, Virginia by H. Maxwell and H. Swisher, Hampshire Co., Virginia deed records 47-pg. 376.)
5.     Eleanor MORELAND was born 13 Nov. 1814 and died 9 Sept. 1818 (Source: Capon Chapel Cemeter record.)
