I
am seeking help with the following Morelands because I think they were related
to my grandfather's mother Mary MORELAND.
My grandfather, William Andrew COWAN,
was born 23 November 1853 in Tennessee. His death certificate lists his parents
as Marion COWAN and Mary MORELAND both of Tennessee.
I haven't been able to find a Marion COWAN so have begun to think
this may have been his middle name. I found them next door to my grandfather in
1870 Farmersville, Collin County, Texas census.
Nathaniel Washington MORELAND born 28 February 1821, Carter Co., Tennessee; died 24 December 1878 Collin Co., Texas buried Hendrick Cemetery, Collin County. These dates came from his tombstone.
His wife, Sarah Jane WIGGINS, was born 26 April 1828 North Carolina and died 6 April 1894 Fannin County, Texas, buried Burns Cemetery, Trenton, Fannin Co. Texas.
The children of Nathaniel and Sarah Jane were found on the Mormon website:
1. Alice Jane MORELAND born 3 February 1863 probably Carter Co., Tennessee; died 6 March 1952 Grayson Co., Texas; married James Franklin SPINDLE born 5 January 1858 Coffee Co., Tennessee.
2. Laura Evaline MORELAND born 13 February 1861 probably Carter Co., Tennessee; died 9 February 1933 Lubbock Co., Texas; married Benjamin Dowell McLARRY born 28 November 1851Maury Co., Tennessee
3. Mante MORELAND (female) no further info
4. Ester MORELAND -no further info
5. Mary MORELAND - no further info
6. George MORELAND - no further info
7. Archibald MORELAND - no further info
8. Maxey MORELAND - no further info
On the 1870 census for Collin Co., Texas the children's names differ somewhat:
Ester age 23
Robert age 20
George age 19
Archibold age 17
Sarah age 15
Mary age 13
Laura age 9
Alice age 7
On the 1870 Collin
County census, when my grandfather was next door to Nathaniel and Sarah Jane,
he was in the household of an
Ann REED along with his two brothers James COWAN age 14 and John COWAN age 8. William
was 16 at the time.
My
notes show that Alice Jane MORELAND was born 3 February 1860 (in Texas according to the 1870 Collin Co., Texas
census); died 6 March 1952 and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Whitewright,
Grayson Co., Texas. She
married 27 September 1885 in Trenton, Fannin Co., Texas to Dr. James Franklin SPINDLE born 5 January 1858 in Coffee Co., Tennessee; died
11 June 1941 in Whitewright. His parents were William Robert SPINDLE
and Siotha Lucinda FRANKLIN.
They had 9 children.
The 1870 Collin County, Texas census has all of their children except these two born in Georgia. That is another reason I feel that these Morelands were related to my g-grandmother Mary MORELAND, wife of Marion COWAN. The same 1870 census shows my grandfather, William Andrew COWAN born Tennessee, his brother James COWAN born Tennessee, but his brother John COWAN born Georgia. John died in Fannin County, Texas when he was a young man and is buried in Indian Creek Cemetery in Fannin County along with most of my family.
Laura Evaline MORELAND born 13 February 1861 (in Texas according to the 1870 Collin Co., Texas census) died 9 February 1933 probably in Lubbock, Lubbock Co., Texas; buried 10 February 1933. She married Benjamin Dowell McLARRY 1882 in Texas. He was born 28 November 1851 Maury Co., Tennessee; died 10 January 1929 in Lubbock and was buried 17 January 1929 in Lubbock. His was married first to Mary Jona "Mollie" CHURCH 29 November 1872 in Duck River, Hickman Co., Tennessee. His parents were Isaac Henry McLARRY and Adeline "Addie" DOWELL. Benjamin and Laura Evaline had 8 children most of whom were born in Nobility, Fannin Co., Texas which is where I was born and raised!

I
hope someone will be able to give me more information on these Morelands.

In June, 2000 1 published a WYLIE family
history. One of the problems we had was Frances WYLIE who married
Ambrose MORELAND. Frances was a daughter of my earliest
American ancestor, Dr. James WYLIE and his wife Nancy LEE (both born in
Ireland). In my history I had to leave blank the data on Ambrose and Frances
WYLIE MORELAND. We only knew her by the estate settlement (1827)
and the York County, South Carolina census of 1830. After 1830, we
knew nothing, but had guessed they had migrated along with many other York
Countyians to other states, but could never find them. Now that has changed
thanks in the most part to a Moreland descendant named Etta Silvertooth of La
Marque, Texas. This wonderful lady has answered some very significant questions
on my Morelands. She has even supplied us with the names of the children of Ambrose
and Frances and some of the places they migrated.
There are still gaps that I
need help on. From other sources we believe they migrated (with his father)
from York County, South Carolina to Baldwin County, Georgia c 1830s (however this has not been verified)
then to Alabama (Huntsville?) then to Lafayette County,
Mississippi. There the record stops on Ambrose and Frances and picks
up with one of their sons, Adam S. MORELAND. We do not know when or where Ambrose and Frances
died, or where they are buried. Other than Adam Sheffield MORELAND,
we know nothing about the other children of Ambrose and Frances
except their names:
- Nancy L. MORELAND born
York Co., South Carolina 1822.
- unknown infant daughter?, born 1825,
York Co., South Carolina
- James W. MORELAND born
1828 York Co., South Carolina.
- John C. MORELAND born
1830 York Co., South Carolina
- Samuel MORELAND born
1832 York Co., South Carolina
- Robert MORELAND born
1836, Alabama??
- Adam S. MORELAND born
1837, York Co., South Carolina; died 1881 in Arkansas
- William P. MORELAND born
1838, Alabama
- Francis MORELAND born
1842, Alabama.
- Gamaliel MORELAND born
1844, Alabama.
I would welcome hearing from
anyone who may be descendants of Ambrose and Frances or their
children or who may have tracked the migrations of this family (we refer to
them as "the moving Morelands").
I checked Eldon Edgin’s
compilation of Morelands in census records and found the following in York Co.,
South Carolina:
Mary MOORLAND, 1790 York Co., South Carolina
John MORELAND, 1790 York Co., South Carolina
Jacob MORELAND, 1800 York Co., South Carolina
John MORELAND, 1800 York Co., South
Carolina
John MORELAND, 1810 York Co., South
Carolina
George MORELAND, 1810 York Co., South Carolina
James MORELAND, 1820 York Co., South Carolina
John MORELAND, 1820 York Co., South Carolina

This is from Virgil D.

This now identifies the son-in law as a William MORELAND, but which William?
