1810 Wayne Co., Kentucky census – no MORELANDs

1820 Wayne Co., Kentucky census – no MORELANDs but possibly associated families of Major HANCOCK page 80, Idrin(?) RAINBOLT page 82, James LOYD, page 82, William HICKS page 82. Also on page 82 were James GRINDLE, Samuel RECTOR (husbands of daughters of Reuben SIMPSON) and Isaac SHERRIL (probably related to Reuben SIMPSON’s wife, Sarah SHERRILL who had previously resided in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina.)

1821 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list, William MORELAND appeared for the first time and paid tax for one white poll and 2 horses (he didn’t own any land yet).

Wayne Co., Kentucky Deed Book C, Compiled and published by June Baldwin Bork page 53: September 23, 1822, recorded 9 October 1822 page 373, Richard SUMMERS and Sary his wife to William MORELAND, $350 for 90 acres by survey dated 10 April 1806 on North side of Beaver Creek, WRIGHT’s line, a dividing line between SUMMERS and MORELAND. Signed Richard SUMMERS, Sary (x) SUMMERS.

1822 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list, William MORELAND paid taxes on 100 acres of land on Beaver Creek, 1 white poll and 2 horses. Also on the tax list were Major HANCOCK, Benjamin HANCOCK, Jesse HANCOCK, William HANCOCK, James LOYD and others.

1823 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list, William MORELAND paid tax on 90 acres of land on Beaver Creek, land originally entered by R. SUMMERS, 1 white poll and 1 horse.

1824 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list, William MORELAND paid tax on 90 acres of land entered by R. SUMMERS on Beaver Creek, one white poll and 1 horse. Dudley MORELAND paid tax for one white poll and one horse. (This is the first time Dudley MORELAND appeared in Wayne County.)

Wayne Co., Kentucky Deed Book D, Compiled and published by June Baldwin Bork page 17: October 20, 1824, recorded 21 October 1824 page 107-108, William MORELAND and Temperance his wife to John MORELAND, $400 for 90 acres by survey dated 10 August 1811 on north side of Beaver Creek, WRIGHT’s line, dividing line between Richard SUMMERS and said MORELAND. Signed William (+) MORELAND, Temperance (+) MORELAND. Wit: Summers WRIGHT, Dudley MORELAND.

1825 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list, John MORELAND paid tax on 95 acres of land on Beaver Creek, one white poll and 2 horses. Dudley MORELAND had one white poll and one horse.

1826 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list. Dudley and John MORELAND (spelled MOLAND) appeared in Capt. Archibald SHAEMAKER’s Company, Dudley had one white poll and one horse, John paid tax on 90 acres on Beaver Creek, one white poll and 2 horses.

1827 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list. John and Dudley were still in Capt. Archibald SHOEMACKER’s Company (their names were spelled John MOLAND and Zudley MOLAND). John paid taxes on 90 acres on Beaver Creek, 1 white poll and 2 horses and Dudley had one white poll and one horse.

1828  Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list. John MORELAND was taxed for an additional 50 acres and Dudley still had no land.

1829 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list. John MORELAND was taxed for 140 acres again, Dudley still had one white poll and 2 horses.

In 1830 the only MORELANDs on the tax list were Dudley and John list. Although Jesse and Jacob MORELAND were heads of households on the U.S. Census for the same year, they never appeared on any tax lists and apparently weren’t in Wayne County for very long.

Wayne Co., Kentucky Deed Book E, Compiled and published by June Baldwin Bork page 55: August 23, 1831, recorded 10 September 1831, page 425-426, Isaac N. BEESON and Charity his wife to John MORLAND, $15 for 50 acres on waters of Beaver Creek, east side of creek road leading to Abraham VANWINKLE’s, MARTIN’s line, was patented to BEESON on 14 May 1824. Wayne Co., Kentucky Deed Book F, compiled and published by June Baldwin Bork page 17: January 31, 1832, Recorded 6 August 1832, page 91-92 McFarland CANTERBERRY and wife Polly to William CARPENTER, $40 for 40 acres on waters of Beaver Creek. 24 September 1832 Dudley MORELAND applied for a pension based upon his Revolutionary War service (Pension # R7360) and states that he entered the service under Col. Nathaniel MORRIS of Virginia and Capt. Samuel RICHARDSON under a draft in 1778 in Goochland Co., Virginia for 6 months and that he was living in Goochland Co., Virginia during the American Revolution, that he served several tours of duty for a total of 18 months service, that he moved from Goochland County about 30 years previously and moved to Carter Co., Tennessee, then to Wayne Co., Kentucky about 11 years previously.

1833 Wayne Co., Kentucky Tax List, I didn’t find John MORELAND on the list, but Dudley was there and he had 1 white poll and 1 horse.

1834 Wayne Co., Kentucky Tax List. John MORELAND paid taxes on 390 acres, some of which was categorized as “land for hire.” Dudley was listed as Dualy MORELAND and was taxed for 1 white poll and 2 horses. Jacob and Jesse MORELAND did not appear on the list.

1835 Wayne Co., Kentucky Tax List. John MORELAND paid taxes on 240 acres. Dudley MORELAND had 1 white poll and 2 horses.

Wayne Co., Kentucky Deed Book G, compiled and published by June Baldwin Bork page 4: December 1835, recorded 11 May 1836, page 24-26, William DAVIS and Dicy his wife to John MORELAND, all of Wayne, $500 for two tracts: (1) 200 acres, beg on north side of Beaver Creek, Francis VICKERY’s survey to patent line, Dozan WAYDE’s corner, (2) 134 acres beg. At James BARNETT’s lower line, on Beaver Creek, being same tract purchased by DAVIS from the widow and heirs of John STEPHEN’s dec’d. Signed William DAVIS, Disa (x) DAVIS, Rowan Co., Tennessee [probably should Roane County] Henry S. PRUVIS, Deputy for said William DAVIS who states he is personally acquainted with DAVIS, Disa DAVIS relinquished dower in Wayne.

1836 Wayne Co., Kentucky Tax List. Dudley was listed as Dula MORELAND (1 white poll and 1 horse) and John MORELAND paid taxes on 300 acres and 3 horses.

GODDARD, $100 for 50 acres on waters of Beavers Creek, east side of Beaver Creek Road leading to Abram VANWINKLE’s, Samuel MARTIN’s line. Signed John MORELAND, Jane MORELAND.

STEPHENSON, heirs of J.M. STEPHENSON; guardian, John M. STEPHENSON; Ct. of Appt., May 1836; Penalty, $2000.00; Securities, James GWINN, John McLAIN, John MORLAND, Jeremiah S. PIERCE and Thomas McCOLLOM. Note that this item is not dated but it appeared in Guardian Reports, 1820 – 1837.

1837 Wayne Co., Kentucky Tax List. I didn’t find Dudley on this list but John MORELAND paid tax on 324 acres of land valued at $600.00.

1838 Wayne Co., Kentucky Tax List. Dudley MORELAND was listed as a voter. This was the last time Dudley appeared on the tax list. Also on this list was Tarlton MORELAND listed with one voter and one male between the ages of 5-18. I have no idea who he is. I didn’t find John on this list.

29 August 1839 Wayne Co., Kentucky Dudley MORELAND’s widow, Elizabeth, made a declaration stating that she was age 78 on January 18, 1839, that her husband died 13 February 1839, that they had married in Goochland Co., Virginia on 4 April 1784 and they had moved to Carter Co., Tennessee, then to Wayne Co., Kentucky where they had lived for 16 years in March of 1839. She amended her declaration in 1843 and stated that she and Dudley had married in 1785.

At Joseph BEARD’s NE corner, reservation of 50 acres granted to William FURR by patent. Signed David DUNCAN, Sally DUNCAN. Wit: F.P. STONE, Richard M. HADEN.

On the north side of Beaver Creek, Francis VICKORY’s survey, Dogan WADE’s corner being same tract deeded to MORELAND by William DAVIS on 11 December 1835. 1839 Wayne Co., Kentucky Tax List. John MORELAND was on this list with 1 white poll, 1 poll for the county levy and 1 female between the ages of 5-18. He had, 2 horses and $100 in cash notes but no land.

1840 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list. John MORELAND had 4 acres on Elk Spring valued at $650 and 1 horse valued at $75.

On James BARNETT’s lower line to Beaver Creek, being same tract that MORELAND purchased from William DAVIS and wife and DAVIS purchased from the widow & heirs of John STEPHENSON, dec’d. Signed John MORELAND, Jane (x) MORELAND, relinquished dower.

1841 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list. John MORELAND paid tax on 6 acres of land on Elk Spring, land valued at $650 and he had 2 horses valued at $150.

Wayne Co., Kentucky Deed Book I, compiled and published by June Baldwin Bork page 24: October 1841, recorded 1 October 1845, page 115-117, John MORELAND and Jane his wife to Robert M. SMITH, $100 paid by Reuben DOWELL on 4 July 1836 and in pursuance to the title bond made at the time of payment by said John MORELAND to Reuben DOWELL on 20 February 1837 and assigned by DOWELL to Robert M. SMITH, containing 160 acres by survey, being on the SE quarter of Section 25, Township 15 North in Range from West in tract of Country or land appropriated for Military Counties in state of Arkansas being same land patented to said John MORELAND on 22 January 1822 by Patent to said MORELAND from U.S. of that date. Signed John MORELAND, Jane (x) MORELAND. We, Bartholomew HADEN and William P. HARDIN, two justices of peace for Wayne Co. certifies that deed from John & Jane MORELAND to Robert SMITH was produced in our court. Jane MORELAND relinquished dower.

1842 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list. John MORELAND’s 6 acres valued at $650 can be understood in light of the fact that he had a tavern license. A West MORELAND appeared on this list with no land. Perhaps he was a relative who worked for John in the tavern?

Wayne Co., Kentucky Deed Book J, compiled and published by June Baldwin Bork page 35: March 27, 1843, Recorded 30 March 1843 page 245-246, William RAY and Charity his wife to James G. CECIL and William J. KINDRICK $275 for 2 lots joining each other near the town of Monticello, corner where the hen house stood at the date of deed for the same made by Thomas HUTCHISON to RAY on 14 October 1836, crossing the pond, both being same conveyed to Thomas HUTCHISON by Stephen SCOTT and wife on 29 October 1835 and recorded in Deed Book F:244 and by HUTCHISON to RAY on 14 October 1836 and it is fully understood that this conveyance is to include all the land and ground belonging that SCOTT sold to RAY. Signed Wm. RAY, Charity (+) RAY relinquished dower. Recorded by Wm. SIMPSON, clerk.

27 March 1843, recorded 29 March 1843 page 246-247, I John MORELAND, in consideration for the sum in above deed from RAY and wife to CECIL & KINDRICK dated 27 March 1843 and for other good and valuable considerations do relinquish unto CECIL and KINDRICK all rights I may have to said lots.

Wayne Co., Kentucky Deed Book J, compiled and published by June Baldwin Bork page 36: April 4, 1843, recorded 20 October 1843 page 257, Instrument of writing, “I, John MORELAND of Wayne guaranty that the within named person [James COFFEY] will not hereafter take any advantage whatever touching the within conveyance on any amount whatever but will at all times hereafter recognize and ratify the same. Signed John MORELAND.

1843 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list. John MORELAND had no land. He paid tax on 1 horse valued at $30. West MORELAND was not on this or subsequent tax lists.

1844 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list. John MORELAND had 1 white poll and a tavern license. On this list children between the ages of 5-16 were listed, but John had no children of those ages.

1845-1846 Wayne Co., Kentucky tax list. John MORELAND appeared on the list with one white poll and nothing else. After 1846 he didn’t appear on the tax lists of Wayne Co., Kentucky any longer.

Wayne Co., Kentucky Marriages and Vital Records, Volume One, Marriages A – J, 1801 – 1860, Compiled and published by June Baldwin Bork, 1972, page 145: John HORSEY and Elizabeth CHOAT married 9 September 1843 by C.L. HIGGINBOTHAM. Surety, John MORELAND.

1850 Wayne Co., Kentucky census – no MORELANDs

29 February 1858 Clinton Co., Kentucky, John MORELAND, administrator of the estate of Elizabeth MORELAND, deceased, stated in an affidavit that Elizabeth, his mother, died in Wayne Co., Kentucky in March 1846. He stated that at the time of the application for pension there were several children living, but since then two of the children had died. The only surviving children were Mary WHALEY, formerly MORELAND, Anne BRUMMET, formerly MORELAND, Winny HOLLEY, formerly MORELAND, Elizabeth WOODLEY, formerly MORELAND and John MORELAND (the declarant), that William MORELAND, now deceased was also a child of his mother and father. Sisters Mary and Anne were both older than he (John). He stated that he would be age 56 on 11 June 1858 and had lived in Wayne County about 22 years and for the past 6 years had lived in Monticello, that his mother had lived with him since his father died, until she died. Stated that she died 10 March 1846 at his sister WOODLEY’s house, where she had gone a few days previous to her death.
