1. Winna MORELAND, (daughter of Dudley
MORELAND)[1],[2] was born Abt. 1794 in Virginia[3], and died Bet. 1850 - 1860. She married William Christofer HOLLEY[4],[5],[6] August 30, 1816 in Carter Co., Tennessee[7]. He was born
Abt. 1795 in Anson Co., North Carolina[8], and died Aft. 1870 in Clinton, Van Buren Co.,
Arkansas.

Notes for William Christofer HOLLEY:
The identity of William's
wife is established in 3 parts:
1) The 1850 Census.
2) Their marriage in Carter Co., Tennessee.
3) Their son William Moreland HOLLEY's middle name.
I had known that his middle initial was M., but only learned recently
from Millie Burford, a HOLLEY cousin from St. Louis, that the M. stood
for MORELAND. This was yet
another lead, and I am now reasonably sure that Winna MORELAND
was William C. HOLLEY's wife.

Dear Elizabeth:
I read with great interest
your article in the last "Moreland Muster". In 1990/1991 I
corresponded with Shirley J. Spetman of Red Oak, Iowa regarding your ancestors.
She sent me much info on the family of William and Rhoda WILLOUGHBY MORELAND. She shows William's
father to be Thomas MORELAND, born in Tennessee in 1751 but her info on Thomas
was vague (note, born Tennessee in 1751 is highly unlikely). I tried to
establish a connection with Thomas MORELAND, born 1753 in
Goochland Co., Virginia ( brother of Dudley),
children of Wright MORELAND of Goochland
Co., Virginia. I wasn't able to clearly establish any connection between William
of Estill Co., Kentucky and Wright MORELAND's descendants. I have been wrong plenty of times
before and I certainly could be here. . . .
There is another MORELAND
family in Clark /Estill Counties during this time, Thomas H. MORELAND born 1775 / 1785. 1 drew up a chart on his 14
children born from 1800 through 1830. 1 was not able to identify any of the
children but you will notice a bunch of MORELANDs that show up in various
documents showing given names different than any of William's
descendants. Whether or not they are related has not been established. This Thomas
H. MORELAND is not known
to have any connection to the Thomas who appears in the 1830 Monroe,
Tennessee census but is right age for a
son.
Ages of the children of the William
MORELAND on page 364
of the Monroe Co, Tennessee census of 1830 do not jive with ages of
children named in the will of William of Estill Kentucky. The William of Monroe is thought to be the father of Hardin
MORELAND who also
appears in the Monroe Tennessee 1830 census. It is believed that William
of Monroe County 1830 left Tennessee about 1837 and was listed in the Murray
Co., Georgia census of 1840. Then when son Hardin
went to Georgia after 1840, William returned to Bradley Co, Tennessee from where he was last heard from in 1855. William
of Estill Co., Kentucky died in 1836.
Now with regard to Dudley, the brother of Thomas, sons of Wright. You said that GEDCOM files show his William
died on May 25, 1846. This is incorrect; May 25,1846 was the date of
the Clinton Co., Tennessee Court document in which William's younger brother John stated in a sworn declaration that "William,
now deceased was also a child of my parents". Therefore, William would
have died any time prior to May 25,1846. My 3rd great- great, William
who married Temperance COFFEY, died in 1841 in Indiana. Prior to his moving to Indiana, my William & family lived near Dudley and John in Wayne Co Kentucky and there is a deed signed by William
and Temperance MORELAND and other records on file in Wayne Co. Prior
to their moving to Wayne Co Kentucky, Dudley, William and John were all in Carter Co., Tennessee and prior to that, Goochland Co. Virginia. So it is not likely that Dudley
was the father of William of Estill
Co., Kentucky.
I will be interested in any
further research you do on the William of Estill family and I will also
try to follow further from this end. One clue may be the HENDERSON family. . . Silas
MORELAND married a HENDERSON
‑ Silas may have been one of the sons of Thomas H. MORELAND. Hardin MORELAND (son of William of Monroe Co.,
Tennessee) had a son named Thomas Henderson MORELAND. Whether or not these
families are connected remains to be seen.

Dear Nona,
I noticed in the last issue
of The Moreland Muster, page 6, a short paragraph that states:
"There was also an Andrew
MORELAND in Amherst
Co., Virginia on page 384, 9 Nov. 1801: Andrew
MORELAND, AC, to Joel PONTON, AC, for 18 pounds, stock. Wit: Thos. FORTUNE Sr., Thos.
E. FORTUNE."
That's my Andrew MORELAND!!!
In 1801, Joel PONTON would be Andrew
MORELAND's daughter's (Isabelle MORELAND PONTON) father‑in‑law! I am sending you
copies of two sheets sent to me by Susan Stepp a descendant of Isabelle MORELAND
PONTON.
You can see why I have an
interest in all of the Jesse and John MORELANDs, however, all of them that have been in your
publication have not listed Andrew MORELAND as their father.
From the pedigree chart:
Andrew MORELAND Sr. born about 1750 probably Ireland; died after 21 June 1802 Amherst Co., Virginia. His daughter was Isabelle
MORELAND born about
1781 Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. She married 12 January
1801 Amherst Co., Virginia to William PONTON born 1772
Virginia; died 20 May 1834 Texas.

The Early Families
Of Grafton
by Thelma
Hansford, Seaford
When Robert Alexander
MORELAND gave a deed
to The Rev. George W. TRIMYER for the place
that later became the Methodist Church parsonage on Grafton Drive, he gave as
one of the boundaries "cast by Lewis MORELAND's land." Lewis MORELAND,
born ca. 1800, was the youngest brother of Edward MORELAND, and had three wives: Mary
TABB; Elizabeth CURTIS; and Lucy MOUNTFORT by whom he
had nine children. Lewis was constable in York County in 1830 and later was
Commissioner of Revenue. He was in a position to know when certain tracts of
land were on the market for settling debts or family estates.
He became indebted to John
BAILEY Sr. and to cover this he gave a deed‑in‑trust
against his property September 6, 1836. The tract contained 400 acres
"where he resided" and it was bounded on the north by Edvard BELL south by George
COOPER; east by William MARTIN; west by the land of the heirs of Edward MORELAND and John CURTIS now deceased
(a more detailed description is found in a deed from Thomas P. CHISMAN el al. to Lewis
MORELAND, dated Sept. 7, 1836. York Deed Book 14, p. 309.)
Lewis died
in June 1849, according to Grafton Christian Church records. In the process of
settling his estate, York Co. Circuit Court named a commission to act on this
matter "Fred POWER, so
named, in a suit in chancery therein defending under the style of 'Bloodgood
& Co.' against Lewis MORELAND (Jr.) administrator to sell a tract of
land belonging to the estate of said Lewis MORELAND,
deceased, of one part and Thomas J. CROCKETT of the other part for $500—power is granted to
CROCKETT".
This is described on
November 24, 1853, as being bound on the east by the swamp dividing said tract
from the land of Christopher CURTIS Jr.
and Robert LEE and by the
old road running from near the comer of Lewis MORELAND's residence, on the South
by the land of Lewis MORELAND running from the swamp mentioned
above to the comer of cleared land by the old road the tract being part of the real estate of Lewis
MORELAND. The size was estimated as "between 80 and 100 acres"
(York Deed Book 15, p. 376)
A later deed dated October
23, 1867 was drawn up between Franklin MORELAND (youngest son of Lewis ) and Thomas
J. CROCKETT for 160 acres
for which CROCKETT paid $160 for the tract known as where Lewis
had residence at the time of his death. York County Justice of the Peace William
WARE certified that MORELAND acknowledged
the deed. It was filed February 6, 1868. (York Deed Book 17. p. 112).
Apparently this was the same tract but the title was not clear until Franklin
became of age. . .
Edward BELL is mentioned
as owner of land bordering on Lewis MORELAND’s and is known today as Acree Acres. Sometime
later Virgil ACREE possessed it
and he sold it to LOTTS, the real estate developer.
Note from Nona:
Mary Anne has apparently
located information about some of the descendants of an early York Co.,
Virginia family. From my notes:
Thomas MORELAND was born ca. 1605 in England; died between 1663-65 Grafton District, York Co., Virginia. He was in
Virginia by 1624 according to Hotten: Thomas MORELAN was 19 in 1624 (in
Virginia). In 1624 he had 100 acres of land in York Co., Virginia. In 1648 he
had 100 acres in Charles River Co., Virginia. He had the following known
children:
- William MORELAND probably
born between 1625-45; resided in Hampton Parish, York Co., Virginia in
1665; married Alice.
- John MORELAND born
between 1625-45; married Ann BELL and had
a son, Francis who married Ann HUBBARD.
- Edward MORELAND born
between 1625-45
- Thomas MORELAND born
between 1625-45.
Thomas MORELAND purchased land in Kent Co.,
Virginia in January 1663. William,
son of Thomas, sold the land in March 1665 at which time his father was
deceased.
GEDCOMs in circulation on
the Internet shows the ancestors of Wright MORELAND of Goochland Co., Virginia as:
Matthew MORELAND
John Holt MORELAND
John MORELAND
Thomas MORELAND
I
don’t think that lineage can be proven. A lot of bogus data is in circulation
on the web and through Family Tree Maker CDs. It is my hope that we will
continue to follow the example set by careful and diligent researchers like
Irene Carl who examined original records and discovered the ancestors of Wright
MORELAND.
