The Moreland Muster, Volume V, Issue 4 Fall 1992

MORELAND LETTERS

Dear Nona,

I read the last newsletter with particular interest. Let's be careful not to confuse the Thomas MORELANDs in Virginia. Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, p. 1488 lists two early Thomas MORELANDs to Virginia, one in 1621, age 19, one in 1624, age 19. The 1621 Thomas is listed on p. 262 in The Original List: Persons of Quality 1600-1700 by John C. Hotten, as a servant. On p. 20 of Hotten's Original List from Great Britain to Plantations he states that Thomas MORELAND was killed in an Indian raid in 1622. The Thomas MORELAND mentioned in Adventurers of Purse and Person should refer to the Thomas of 1624.

The Thomas MORELAND in Cavalier and Pioneers, Patent Bk. 2, p. 180-81, is probably the same one in the following reference who owns a ship Roll 30,989 Charles City (York) 1655-1665 p. 614, 10 Jan. 1665: "Thomas MORLAND, age 42 yrs or thereabouts examined and sworn as follows: That being a ME I hav 500 in Me sas wollo Company before being arrested as Mr. WYATTS. He inquired who enjoined an arrow against him and I told him of Indians of him in Pomunkey named in M.E. WYATTS sister of Iofamarow who upon he fell into a passion so and assailed his old dogg and groaned. . .he would spend 500 lbs. . .be he could. . . and Antoney WYATT tobacco 200 goods out of his ship and say no more. s/ Thomas MORELAND (The page was in such poor condition that this is the best I could do deciphering it. Perhaps someone else should look at it). The age difference tells me that this Thomas MORELAND is not the same as either of the ones listed in the passenger lists index. He would have been born about 1623. The first Thomas would have been born in 1602, the second would have been born in 1605.

John Holt MORELAND is the earliest one of ours that I could be sure of. To my knowledge, I have never even guessed who his father might be.

Didn't someone mention the Patillo family? I would refer her to the Patillo History. A copy is in the Genealogy Library in Albuquerque, NM.

Hope this will help to keep our Thomases separated.

Dear Nona,

In searching my card file for John MORELANDs in Georgia I find: John MORELAND, Rev. War soldier from Georgia's Roster of Rev." Supplement to L.L. Knight taken from original documents in Dept. of Archives of History. A list of the warrants issued for Co. of Washington from its establishment to 6 Aug. 1787 (containing continental citizens and renewed bounties). (Marie: a part of Washington Co. was cut off to make Putnam Co. and Green Co., Georgia and a John MORELAND born 1758 Virginia, married 1785/6 to Mary TUCKER (daughter of Colson TUCKER of Virginia) died in 1826 in Putnam Co., Georgia. (Will Book B, 1823-1856). John and Mary had Isaac, Colson, John Jr., Wood, Lucy, Patty, Frances. I have an entry that John, Sr. was in 3rd Regiment (D.A.R.). John, Jr. married Lucy HAWKINS, daughter of Nicholas HAWKINS (will, 26 Aug. 1833) and died in Green Co, GA.

There was a John MORELAND in Jefferson Co., GA 3 July 1797. He was on a Grand Jury List. His wife was Ann TURNER. They sold land 1802. They were "of Jefferson Co." (Franklin Co., GA rec.) They bought 1200 acres of land in 1797.

Lucy MORELAND, wife of John MORELAND, deceased 1 April 1799 (Green Co., GA, Bk. A, p. 281) "letters of ad. on estate of John MORELAND, dec'd."

In land lottery of 1806 in Hancock Co., GA John MORELAND, 2 draws.  A John MORELAND was in Hancock Co., GA, 9 Oct. 1795 (mentioned in John TRIPP's estate).

Edward MORELAND and Nancy (MCCLENDON) MORELAND had a son, John, who died 1891 in Florida. There was a John MORELAND in Jones Co., GA. (Deed Bk. A, pp. 129-130) 23 Oct. 1807, wit. a deed.

One John MORELAND married Ann TURNER, daughter of Joseph TURNER. John STURDIVANT d. 1824 married her sister, Martha TURNER (will of Joseph TURNER) Hancock Co., GA. There was a Turner MORELAND in Putnam Co., GA, 1810 who owned 10-15 slaves. Turner MORELAND died in Chambers Co., Ala. 29 Oct. 1857 (obit.). John Tucker MORELAND born in GA 1814, son of Colson and Sarah MORELAND died in Chambers Co., Ala. 30 Sept. 1847 in his 33rd year. His wife was Sophia. (Southern Christian Advocate, 12 Nov. 1847). Marie: Colson was son of John MORELAND and Mary TUCKER. The Colson name came from her father, Colson TUCKER Albemarle Co., Virginia.

These are most of the Georgia John MORELANDs that I find. Hope they will be of some help.
